Overview

The UK government provides grants to owners of plug-in vehicles to help cover the cost of installing an EV chargepoint. To qualify, the vehicle must appear on the OZEV-approved vehicle eligibility list.

Only vehicle manufacturers can apply to have a vehicle added to this list. Once approved, eligible vehicles enable their owners to access applicable residential and commercial chargepoint grant schemes.

Vehicle eligibility criteria

To be eligible, a vehicle must:

  • Be a battery electric vehicle (BEV) or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)
  • Be capable of using an electric vehicle chargepoint

Eligible vehicle categories

Vehicle variants

Manufacturers must ensure that all eligible electric variants of a model are correctly registered.

  • If all variants of a model are electric, individual variant details are not required.
  • If a model includes both electric and non-electric variants, only the electric variants must be submitted.
  • Any new electric variants introduced later must be notified to OZEV to remain eligible.
If you are unsure whether a new vehicle variant must be registered, manufacturers should contact OZEV directly before launch to avoid delays in grant eligibility.

Multi-stage built vehicles

Any multi-stage built M1 vehicle must be approved as a completed vehicle, including both chassis and bodywork, before it can be added to the eligible list.

How to apply to register a vehicle

Only vehicle manufacturers may submit applications to OZEV.

  • Submit an application using the official OZEV vehicle registration form
  • OZEV aims to assess applications and issue a decision within 2 months
  • Approved vehicles are added to the online EV chargepoint grant eligibility list
If an application does not meet the criteria, OZEV will explain the reason and may request further evidence or confirm rejection.

Information required for registration

Manufacturers must provide the following information when submitting an application:

  • Company registration number
  • Registered company address
  • Named contact person and contact details
  • Vehicle make and model
